A Hot Day for the Saugus Game

Newbury Park Panthers (1-0)
vs.
Saugus Centurions (1-0)

On a bright, sunny day in Santa Clarita, with temperatures in the high-90s, our band of 35 JV Panthers faced a solid opponent with a large roster, a fast paced offense and team determined to defend their home turf.

The Saugus JV team beat Simi Valley's JV squad last week 21-19 while your Panthers were overwhelming Birmingham's JV team 42-7.

 Neutral Site

The game was played on the campus of the College of the Canyons. As you can see, the College of the Canyons Cougars share their beautiful stadium with both the Hart H.S. Indians and the Saugus Centurions.

A Boy and His Hammer

Our "Hammer Time" tradition continues at Newbury Park H.S.

Captains

Our leaders today were #45 Connor "The Hatchet" Hobson, #22 Kaiden Raduziner, #23 Andrew Noble and #7 Tyler Hwang.

#25 Nick Cellona leading us out
with the BIG HAMMER

Saugus Chain Crew

These guys did a great job which made the game experience much more enjoyable for all of the Panther coaches and players.

Dario Longhetto Kicking Off

Dario did another good job in the Saugus game by kicking four extra points and getting us great field position with his four touchbacks on kickoffs.

FIRST QUARTER:
Saugus Ball: The Panthers came out fired up on defense after Dario Longhetto's touchback on the game's opening kickoff, Three & Out, Punt (T&OP #1!) for the day, allowing only one yard.

Newbury Park Ball: The Panthers' offense put together a nice seven play, 46 yard scoring drive that was capped off by Kelani Sanchez 3 yard TD run. Tyler Hwang had three pass completions in the drive that totaled 36 yards. With Dario Longhetto's PAT, the score was NP 7 - Saugus 0.

Defense Swarming to the Ball

Saugus Ball: On the Centurions' second play they connected on a 46 yard pass play. Fortunately for NPHS, Andrew Noble tracked down the Saugus receiver and forced him to fumble. Kelani Sanchez recovered the fumble. That counts as an unusual T&OP #2!!

Teams that hustle and have heart win lots of games.

Newbury Park Ball: The Panther's four play drive ended with an unforced fumble.

Saugus Ball: Saugus put together their best drive of the day, a nine play, 35 yard affair punctuated by a nine yard TD pass. The PAT was good, NPHS 7 - SHS 7.

Newbury Park Ball: After an excellent kickoff return by Kaiden Raduziner that started the Panther drive at their own 40 yard line, Newbury Park drove 46 yards before turning the ball over on downs.

Saugus Ball: On Saugus' first play, which was also the last play of the opening stanza, Tavis Valenzuela intercepted an errant Centurion pass and returned it seven yards. T&OP #3!!!

After 12 minutes of play, Panthers 7 - Centurions 7.

Punt Block Team

SECOND QUARTER:
Newbury Park Ball: Two plays later, Saugus intercepted a Panther pass.

Saugus Ball: The Centurions picked up 26 yards on six plays before punting.

Newbury Park Ball: A seven play drive that picked up 32 yards ended with a 40 yard punt by Tavis Valenzuela.

Saugus Ball: T&OP #4!!!! Three plays for -5 yards. Good job defense.

Trenches

Newbury Park Ball: A four play, 43 yard drive ended with a 30 yard TD pass from Tyler Hwang to Kaiden Raduziner. Dario Longhetto split the uprights again, Newbury Park 14 - Saugus 7.

Andrew Noble in Full Stride

Saugus Ball: T&OP #5!!!!! OK, it was not a punt but on third down, Andrew Noble intercepted a pass and returned it 43 yards to the Saugus one yard line.

Newbury Park Ball: On the first play of this mini-drive, Tyler Hwang used the QB Wedge, made famous in France by QB Mathieu Paredes, to hit pay dirt from a yard out. Dario Longhetto was golden again on the PAT, Panthers 21 - Centurions 7.

Saugus Ball: T&OP #6!!!!!! Saugus got 4 yards on their three snaps.

Newbury Park Ball: Vince Carreon tipped the Saugus punt that caromed into hands of Andrew Noble. Noble's 34 yard punt return gave Newbury Park yet another short field to work with. On the Panthers' first play, Tyler Hwang found Ryan Matlock in the back of the end zone with a 25 yard TD laser shot. The PAT was blocked but it was now Newbury Park 27 - Saugus 7.

Saugus Ball: The ensuing kickoff was the last play of the First Half. I can't count that as a T&OP

The halftime score was . . .

Panthers 27 - Centurions 7

Pass Protection

Because of the great blocking by the offensive line made up of Vince Carreon, Casey Cass, Trevor Martens, Alex Urias and Jack Walsh we were able to amass 401 yards of Total Offense.

THIRD QUARTER:
Newbury Park Ball: Another good kickoff return by Kaiden Raduziner of 33 yards started the Second Half off right. Four plays later, it was the Tyler Hwang to Ryan Matlock connection again, this time for a 17 yard TD. Dario Longhetto's kicking was back on track, the PAT was good and the Panthers were cruising with a leading by a tally of Newbury Park 34 - Saugus 7.

Tavis Valenzuela

An interception, a 40 yard punt and two catches for 37 yards made for great contributions in this game by Tavis.

Saugus Ball: Longhetto's kickoff sailed into the end zone. On the Centurions' first play of the period, Alex Urias forced a fumble that Kelani Sanchez recovered. That was Kelani's second fumble recovery of the game. More importantly, it was T&OP #7!!!!!!!

Nick Cellona
Leading rusher on the day with 68 yards

Newbury Park Ball: The Panthers fumbled it right back to Saugus on the first play.

Saugus Ball: T&OP #8!!!!!!!! The defense played great in only allowing 3 yards on Saugus' three plays.

Cheerleaders
Lots for them to cheer about today

Newbury Park Ball: A nine play, 53 yard drive finished with another one yard "Mathieu Paredes Wedge" by QB Tyler Hwang for the TD. At this juncture we did something completely out of character leading by 33 points with 5:42 remaining in the Third Quarter, we went for two. This was NOT meant as a run up the score, in-your-face gesture. Actually just the opposite was on our minds. If we made the two-point conversion and thus led by 35 points in the Second Half, the Running Clock-Mercy Rule would kick into high gear. With the heat and the way we were dominating we believed it was the wise way to go. On the two-point PAT pass, Tyler Hwang found Ryan Matlock alone at the goal line for the needed three yard gain. Panthers 42 - Centurions 7, the Mercy Rule was invoked helping us keep the score down and salvage some dignity for Saugus.

Kick Off Return

Saugus Ball: T&OP #9!!!!!!!!! Longhetto gets another touchback and the Panthers hold Saugus to six yards on this three snap drive.

Newbury Park Ball: The Panthers run the ball the last four plays of the Third Quarter. After 36 minutes of play, the score is Newbury Park 42 - Saugus 14.

Bombs Away!!!

QB Tyler Hwang had another good day going 15 for 25 (60%) for 248 yards, three TDs and one interception. Tyler also scored two TDs.

FOURTH QUARTER:
Newbury Park Ball: The drive that started at the end of the Third Quarter continued for another five plays, all runs, with NPHS turning the ball over on downs.

Kaiden Raduziner

Kaiden caught six passes for 124 yards and a TD. He also had two kickoff returns for 64 yards.

Again?

Andrew Noble just keeps making big plays regularly. In the Saugus game he had two catches for 23 yards one carry for seven yards, an interception return for 43 yards, three punt returns for 37 yards and drew double coverage that opened up pass routes that enabled our other receivers to have career days.

 Noble Finishing

 Alex Urias Slam Dunking

Saugus Ball: The Centurions' five play drive ends with Shawn Gockie and Mike Estandian breaking up a fourth down Saugus pass.

Tight Roping Down the Sideline

Kelani Sanchez had 56 yards rushing, a TD and caught a screen pass for a 12 yard pick up.

Kaiden Raduziner
made a great catch on this play

Newbury Park Ball: A five play drive ended with a fourth down play call. It was fourth and six and, of course, our backup QB was in the game. Our previous 13 offensive plays since the start of the running clock had all been runs. Should we throw a pass in this situation? My conclusion was, "Why not?" All of our back ups were in the game and our #2 QB deserves to throw the ball once in the game.

73 yards later, the Centurion defender that intercepted the pass crossed the goal line. The kick was good and the score was now Newbury Park 42 - Saugus 14.

 Trevor Martens Goes Airborne

No, really, again???
Noble is loose on an interception

WATER!!!  It was HOT!!!

 Seriously? Noble loose again

Tavis Valenzuela had a good day

He had 40 yard punt, two catches for 37 yards and intercepted a pass.

Ryan Matlock TD

Ryan had four catches for 52 yards, two TDs and a two-point conversion in the Saugus game.

Mike Estandian

Luc Germann

Newbury Park Ball: Two Victory kneel down plays and the game was over . . .

Final Score

With the win, the Panthers are now 2-0 while Saugus drops to 1-1.

Next week, Newbury Park will host the 1-1 Agoura Chargers while Saugus goes up against Buena.

#50 Alex Urias
